Police Investigate Fatal Shooting Incident at Calcutta Tavern


Calcutta: The Police in Calcutta have launched an investigation into a murder and attempted murder case following a fatal shooting incident that occurred on the evening of Friday, 17 October 2025.



According to South African Police Service, the incident took place at approximately 22:00 at a local tavern in Calcutta. Police responded swiftly after receiving a report of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered two individuals lying in a pool of blood, both with gunshot wounds.



Tragically, one of the victims, a male, was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel, while the second victim, a female, was urgently transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. It is alleged that the two victims were known to each other and were in a close relationship. They were reportedly at the tavern together at the time of the incident.



It is alleged that they were shot by unknown suspects who were armed and fled the scene after the shooting. The Police recovered a 9mm pistol with a visible serial number at the scene, which has been seized for further investigation.



At this stage, the motive for the shooting remains unknown, and Police are urging members of the public who may have information that may assist in identifying or locating the suspects to contact Lieutenant Colonel Sikhumbuzo Ceko on 082 922 9902 or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Information can also be shared anonymously via the MYSAPSAPP. All information received will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.



The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the incident and vowed that Police will leave no stone unturned. “We will work around the clock to ensure those responsible for this callous act are swiftly brought to book. The safety of our communities remains our top priority.”
