Gauteng Schools Transform with 8,596 New Smart Classrooms

Johannesburg: Gauteng government schools have witnessed a significant transformation with the introduction of 8,596 smart classrooms, as part of the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE)’s initiative to create digital learning environments equipped with advanced information communications technology.

According to South African Government News Agency, these classrooms, prioritized for township secondary schools and selected primary schools, are a key element of the GDE’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Strategy. The department has been equipping schools with LED interactive display panels to foster interactive and collaborative learning experiences. These devices offer high-definition screens with multi-touch functionality, stylus support, software integration, and various connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, LAN, HDMI, USB, and Bluetooth, along with warranties, educator training, and maintenance support.

The GDE outlines that full ICT schools receive smart classrooms from Grade 7 to 12, while township fee- and no-fee-paying schools receive them from Grades 10 to 12, depending on the readiness of classroom infrastructure. The smart classrooms are required to meet minimum standards, including electricity, safety and security measures, and LED board installations.

Investment in these technologies over the past three financial years has been significant, with the purchase of 1,020 boards at a unit cost of R123,950 in 2022/23, 1,000 boards at R124,730 in 2023/24, and 500 boards at R125,300 in 2024/25. Although no additional smart classrooms are planned for 2025/26 due to budget constraints, Bongani Rainmaker Logistics manages the LED boards’ provisioning and installation, under a project valued at R63 million for the 2024/25 financial year.

The GDE also focuses on special schools, employing 655 full-time specialists, including therapists and nurses, to support special education needs across the province. Psychologists stationed at head office and district offices extend support to all schools within their regions. The department faces staffing challenges, with 453 teacher vacancies and 125 specialist vacancies, and conducts biannual recruitment to address these needs.

Samson LSEN school, with 486 learners, has received R8.9 million for the 2025/26 financial year to enhance teaching, learner wellbeing, transport, and skills development. The school dedicates half of its teaching time to practical skills, with programs evaluated by the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) and GDE District Curriculum and Assessment Units.

Meanwhile, the Nancefield Primary School project in Eldorado Park is progressing, with 69% completion achieved. Managed by SMC Construction and Building, with DNA Land Use Consultants as service providers, the project has been fully funded, with an additional budget allocation of R87 million for completion.
