Acting Provincial Commissioner Welcomes Two Life Terms Handed to Rapist

Potchefstroom: The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Dintletse Molefe, has expressed approval for the two life sentences given by the Potchefstroom Regional Court to 40-year-old Elias Tsetla, convicted of rape on Tuesday, 23 September 2025.

According to South African Police Service, Tsetla was sentenced for the rape of his girlfriend in January 2023 at Ikageng Location, Potchefstroom. The case was investigated by the Potchefstroom Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, leading to Tsetla’s arrest three days after the incident. The accused, a Lesotho national, was unable to verify his legal residency in the country and was additionally charged with violating the Immigration Act of 2002.

The court heard evidence that the victim, then 28, found her boyfriend at home, who accused her of infidelity. An argument ensued, during which Tsetla assaulted and raped her twice. Despite pleading not guilty, Tsetla, who remained in custody since his arrest, was convicted and sentenced as follows:

Count 1: Rape – Life imprisonment

Count 2: Rape – Life imprisonment

Count 3: Violation of Immigration Act – R3000.00 fine or three months imprisonment.

The court also mandated the inclusion of Tsetla’s name in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Major General Molefe, along with Dr. Rachel Makhari, the Director of Public Prosecutions, commended Warrant Officer Jaco Jonker, Prosecutor Advocate Annecke Du Toit, and all involved in securing the conviction. This effort reflects the entities’ dedication to addressing violence against women and children.
