Suspect arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition

WELKOM – On Saturday, 16 April 2022, members of Welkom Public Order Police Task Team were mobilised to attend to a domestic violence complaint at a tavern in C-section, Botshabelo together with Selosesha Crime Intelligence Unit and Botshabelo Crime Prevention Unit members. The members arrived at the tavern at about 11:00 and interviewed the complainant who pointed out the suspect but declined further assistance from the police.

The team took the 41-year-old male to his residential place to search for the firearm he had mentioned when he made threats to the complaint. The house was searched and a handgun was found hidden inside the wardrobe loaded with three live rounds. The serial number of the firearm was filed off.

The firearm and ammunition were seized and the suspect arrested. A case of possession of unlicensed and illegal firearm and ammunition was opened at Boithuso Police Station. The suspect was detained in police custody and he will appear in Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 19 April 2022.
