New Brighton: On 21 January 2019, just before midnight, a 26-year-old female was woken up by two suspects who entered her house in Maqanda Street, New Brighton where she lives with another 83-year-old lady.
The suspects were armed with knives and after threatening her, they took both ladies’ cellphones and both suspects raped the 26-year-old woman. The 83-year-old lady was unharmed during the incident.
An extensive manhunt for the two suspects ensued by the Motherwell Cluster Serious Violent Crime (SVC) Unit as well as the Motherwell Cluster Operational Command Centre (OCC) members. Both suspects were arrested during the early morning hours of today at about 03:00 in Madikana Street, Kwazakele while following up various leads and information.
The suspects, aged 22 and 18, were also found in possession of eight (8) cellphones, including the two phones that were taken during the house robbery.
They were both charged for house robbery and rape and will be appearing before the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on 24 January 2019.
The other phones will also be analysed to establish if it were stolen or robbed from other victims.
The Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie has applauded the speedy arrests that was made after 24 hours and added “SAPS will continue to focus on crimes against women and children. We will make sure these suspects are brought to book and due to the seriousness of this case, we will oppose bail.”
