Police condemn acts of violence after the torching of trucks and ambulance

The SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers has condemned in the most strongest terms the violence which erupted in the Northam Policing area near Thabazimbi in the Modimolle Cluster after two trucks and an ambulance were torched and seven (07) people were also assaulted by a group of protesters along Northam and Brits road last night on 2018-06-20.

It is alleged that a group of community members went on a rampage and engaged on protest actions which obstructed the traffic flow along this road.

During the protests, one (01) ambulance and five (05 trucks where hijacked of which the drivers were attacked and assaulted.

Subsequently, two (02) of the five trucks and an ambulance were torched and some truck drivers were forced to offload sand which they were transporting in the middle of this road closing it for motorists to use.

The Police were summoned who reacted swiftly and intervened until the situation was brought back to normality.

The assaulted drivers were immediately taken to hospital for medical attention and some are still recuperating there.

The estimated damage caused during this incident is over R3 Million and the Public Order Police Unit members are still monitoring the situation.

The suspects involved in this matter are still unknown and there is no arrest.
