Man appears in court for ailing to safeguard firearm, drugs recovered

DURBAN – The use and abuse of drugs has an influence on the increase of crime. In most cases serious and violent crimes are being committed due to the use of drugs. The police officers from the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit are continuing with their mandate to root-out the illegal drug trade in the province.

This was followed by an operation that was carried out on Tuesday night at Minthdale in Newlands East. The team proceeded to a house where a 20-year-old man was found with a firearm unsecured in the house. He was placed under arrest for failing to safeguard the firearm.

Further investigation led the team to another house in the same area where it was established that the backdoor of the house was opened and there was no one inside. A search was conducted and police recovered a packet which contained 53 large pieces of rock cocaine, 126 capsule of heroine, five plastic packets containing cocaine powder as well as six mandrax tablets.

The police officers also seized 55 glass pipes. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs is R27 300-00. The arrested suspect appeared before the Verulam. Magistrates Court on 14 April 2021.
