GQEBERHA – A two-day orientation seminar for 42 newly promoted officers in the Eastern Cape started today, 28 March 2022, at the Sunnyside Training facility in Gqeberha.

The seminar is being facilitated by the Eastern Cape Provincial Human Resource Development under the leadership of Brigadier Freddie and his delegation.

Acting District Commissioner for Nelson Mandela Bay District, Brigadier Luntu Ngubelanga welcomed the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services, Major General Kunene including the facilitators and the newly promoted officers. Brig Ngubelanga gave an overview of the stations, units and the most stubborn crimes affecting the NMB district. He also stated that different approaches were needed for the different areas in the district and he invited the attendees to actively participate in the seminar.

The purpose of the orientation was highlighted by the Detective Commander of Amathole District, Brigadier Freddie. He acknowledged the newly appointed officers and commanders to their posts and iterated that ‘management need to make sure that stations and units are functioning optimally and commanders need to share information on critical organisational priorities. This seminar will prepare officers for their tasks ahead in their newly promoted positions.’ He also mentioned that this seminar aims to encourage members to make a difference in the province.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services, Major General Kunene delivered the key note address and encouraged the attendees to participate and contribute in this informative seminar which is extremely beneficial to everyone. ‘I urge you to get to know your management at your stations and units. Commanders must familiarise themselves with their station area and it is important to know your stakeholders within your community. In order to equip you with the tools for your performance, management felt that an orientation seminar must be held for our newly appointed officers. I appeal to all of you managers, do not be selfish with information, knowledge and experience. Planning is very important for leadership skills through networking and sharing. SAPS is mandated by the Constitution and members and commanders should know the Police Act, regulations and the Code of Conduct. Commanders and members must work as a team to benefit the SAPS and to take SAPS to the next level,’ added Maj Gen Kunene.
