Grootfontein man denied bail for allegedly raping daughter

A man who appeared in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of raping his 13-year-old daughter was denied bail.

According to the charge sheet seen by Nampa on Thursday, the 44-year-old accused appeared before Magistrate Boniface Konga who explained to him his legal rights to apply for a State-funded lawyer through the Directorate of Legal Aid in the Ministry of Justice; represent himself in court, or acquire the services of a private lawyer.

The accused, whose identity is known but is being withheld to protect his 13-year-old Grade 8 daughter, opted to apply for a Legal Aid lawyer.

His case was then postponed to 18 July 2023 for further police investigations, and to allow him time to secure the Legal Aid service.

Public prosecutor, Sarah Kandume represented the State in the matter.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Unit Commander for Community Affairs in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Thursday said a charge of assault through threatening was also added to his alleged offence.

‘It is alleged that the suspect had sexual intercourse with his daughter three times on different days since December 2022,’ Mbeha said.

The suspect also allegedly threatened to kill the minor girl with a knife if she tells anyone of the incident, added Mbeha.

Police investigations continue.
