JOHANNESBURG, March 30 (NNN-SABC) — More than 600 online libraries will be launched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation across South Africa.

The first state-of-the-art online library was launched in Sharpeville on the Vaal Rand, about 70 kilometres south of here, Tuesday. It has received computer equipment valued at 470,000 Rand (about 30,400 US dollars).

The Director of Global Libraries at the Gates Foundation, Deborah Jacobs, said it was important for everyone and especially for people who are disadvantaged.

“Public libraries which are everywhere just like in South Africa could be the place where people could go for equalization and get the skills,” said Jacobs/

She added that recently, the foundation had conducted a survey in South Africa for library users and it revealed that 85 per cent of library users said their health improved because of using the information at the library.
