PARKTOWN – Addressing the proliferation of illicit mining activities is a top priority for the South African Police as these activities are often linked to serious and violent crime within our communities.
Police in Gauteng recovered two unlicensed firearms, two imitation firearms, ammunition and illicit mining equipment on Tuesday, 01 November 2022 in Benoni following a community tip-off.
The multi-disciplinary team comprised of members from Crime Intelligence, Essential Infrastructure Task Team, Gauteng Highway Patrol, Ekurhuleni District Trio Task Team, Ekurhuleni Tactical Response Team (TRT), Benoni Flying Squad, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Community Policing Forum (CPF) and various security companies. Information was operationalised and the team proceeded to an identified address in Benoni.
The suspects managed to flee and evade arrest upon arrival of the team, but a search of the premises led to the recovery of two unlicensed firearms, two imitation firearms, ammunition and illicit mining equipment.
