Accused convicted for tax fraud

FREE STATE – Thiyekile Hendrik Gulwa (42) appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 June 2021, where he was convicted and sentenced on two counts of fraud.

A preliminary probe by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) uncovered Gulwa’s fraudulent activities that costed the receiver of revenue (SARS) in access of more than R800 000. The incident took place over the period between 2015 and 2016.

The matter was then reported to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Bloemfontein for further investigation. Gulwa was served court summons on Monday, 19 October 2020. He appeared in court on several occasions, culminating in his recent conviction on Friday, 25 June 2021.

The court sentenced Gulwa to five years imprisonment which is suspended for five years on condition that he refunds SARS the amount of R832 000 on or before 31 July 2025.
