Amajita travel to Nelspruit to continue with AFCON preps

South Africa’s National Under-20 (Amajita) travelled to Nelspruit on Wednesday (16 January) to continue with their local camp preparations leading up to this year’s CAF Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations set to take place in Niger.

That biennial continental showpiece will run from 2�17 February 2019 in Maradi and Niamey.

In Mpumalanga, Amajita will be based at Ngwenyama Lodge, where they will spend the next four days before they travel back to Johannesburg on Sunday, 20 January.

During their four-day stay Nelspruit, Amajita will face Mozambique’s professional football side, Costa Do Sol FC.

Amajita head coach Thabo Senong stated this encounter will play a key role in helping his side to gage how far they have come in their preparations building up to this year’s continental football showdown.

Amajita are in Group A alongside hosts Niger, Burundi and Niger.

A top two finish in their group will see them forming part of the four African national teams that are to represent CAF in the upcoming 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup later in the year.

We have a confirmed friendly against Mozambican side Costa Do Sol for this coming weekend, Senong said. This will be a good exercise because it will help us measure how far we have come in our preparations, and the areas that we also need to work on as well.

This team (Amajita) has not lost a single match in the last 18 months, Senong added. The last time we lost was in 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup match against Italy. And this is just a highlight of the kind of players who are brought in to represent the nation. They have character and a fight within them and that is what we want.

News: Team effort leads to arrest of 8 and recoveries

King Williamstown: The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Andre Swart applauded the team efforts displayed by the various clusters for the excellent manner in which they successfully executed and effected the arrest of eight (8) suspects who allegedly committed an armed robbery in King Williamstown yesterday afternoon, 16 January 2019.

He issued a warning to perpetrators of crime, “the SAPS in the Eastern Cape are committed to ridding criminals off our streets and we will continue in our pursuit towards our mission to create a safe and secure environment for the community that we serve.”

The combined efforts by members of Alice, Grahamstown, King Williamstown, East London and Port Alfred Clusters last night led to the arrest of eight (8) suspects who were allegedly involved in an armed robbery at a retail outlet in King Williamstown.

It is suspected that the suspects were on their way to Peddie. All the neighbouring clusters were on alert and blocked off entry and exit routes. Members from Grahamstown Crime intelligence were alerted that the vehicle, a silver Opel Corsa, matching the description of the suspects’ vehicle, was travelling on the N2. They spotted the vehicle and with the assistance of Alice Visible Policing Unit and Crime intelligence the vehicle was stopped outside Peddie.

A total of three (3) suspects were arrested and several cellphones suspected to have been taken from the earlier robbery were recovered in the vehicle.

A second vehicle, a white Chev Aveo, also allegedly involved in the crime, was later stopped outside Grahamstown by the Grahamstown Highway Patrol, K9 and Joza Vispol. A further five (5) suspects were arrested. Four firearms and several more cellphones have been recovered.

Forensic experts worked through the night.

The suspects face several charges including armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition.
