PRETORIA– The South African government has donated seven million Rand (about 562,000 US dollars) to the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) humanitarian response for Somalia which has been hit by a prolonged drought.

The funds will go towards providing life-saving assistance to vulnerable communities in the Horn of Africa nation. South Africa’s Director for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Seleka, handed over the donation to the WFP and officials from the Somali government in Mogadishu.

The United Nations estimates that 6.2 million people in Somalia, or half of the country’s population, are in dire need of food assistance because of an on-going drought. It is anchored in decades of fragility, early through conflict and thereafter through droughts, that have affected the country, said WFP country director in Somalia Laurent Bukera.

Unlike in 2011, this time the drought has not caused the situation to deteriorate to a famine because of fast response and better access for aid workers to affected areas.

Somali State Minister Abdullahi Hamud said help was needed as soon as possible. Humanitarian aid if made available early and if sustained works and can help prevent a dire situation.

At the beginning of this year, Somalia, through the UN, made an appeal for 1.6 billion USD to help avert a humanitarian crisis. South Africa has responded with a cash donation of 7.0 million Rand. The funds will go towards providing food assistance to those in need.

Seleka says they are led by a codes of ethics. What guides us is the spirit of Ubuntu and the indomitable spirit of Pan Africanism.

The drought, which has spread over four consecutive poor rainy seasons, has forced millions out of their homes. The worst affected are children and women. South Africa says it will work with the Somali government to find lasting solution to food insecurity in the horn of Africa nation.

Over 100 people arrested as General Sitole calls for calm in the North West Province

Pretoria – The National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla John Sitole, has called for the community of the North West Province, particularly the community of Mahikeng and surrounding areas, to return to peace and calm.

The recent loss of life and the continuing damage of property should neither be tolerated nor condoned by any sector of society as such behaviour not only projects the country in a very negative light but also drastically hampers growth and development in that area.

These actions, which over this past week began as protest actions, have since turned to sheer criminality after vehicles were set alight, shops and buildings looted, private and government buildings broken into and vandalized (which included a police station) must be condemned by all circles in society. This criminality has since spread to the areas of Wolmaransstad, Makwassie, Itsoseng, Zeerust, Vryburg, Delareyville, Taung, Pudimoe and Christiana.

“I am urging the communities of these affected areas, especially community leaders, to come together and work towards peace and stability through robust discussions and negotiations instead of violence,” said General Sitole.

“Since the outbreak of violence I have instructed additional deployments of various disciplines of the SAPS to stabilize and normalize the affected areas,” added General Sitole.

In the process of stabilization and normalization of the areas, more than a hundred suspects aged between 18 and 60 years have been arrested in Mahikeng, Mmabatho, Delareyville and Lomanyaneng on charges of malicious damage to property, public violence, possession of suspected stolen goods and business robbery.

These suspects will be taken through the court processes and the SAPS will ensure that they face the full brunt of the law in an effort to bring this lawless behaviour to a complete halt.

“Police will continue to enforce the law and bring to book those who continue to terrorize communities in these affected areas,” said General Sitole.

If convicted, these accused could face lengthy jail terms. Therefore, wrongdoers should be cautioned that their criminal behaviour could result in dire consequences.
