SOUTH AFRICA’S PRESIDENCY DISMISSES RUMOUR THAT DEPUTY PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA WILL BE SACKED

PRETORIA, Oct 21 (NNN-SABC) — The Presidency says there is no basis for reports that South African President Jacob Zuma will dismiss Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Speculation about Ramaphosa’s removal has weighed heavily on the Rand, with the South African currency weakening some 3.0 per cent against the US dollar.

President Zuma’s spokesperson, Bongani Ngqulunga, said Friday the Presidency would not comment on rumours and gossip.

Ramaphosa is viewed as the most likely rival candidate to former African Union (AU) Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who is Zuma’s pick for president of the African National Congress (ANC) when the ruling party holds its elective conference in December.

Ramaphosa told Parliament on Thursday that he would continue to serve South Africa should Zuma sack him.
