Walden University Scholars of Change Demonstrate the Impact of Positive Social Change

Student and alumni videos document inspiring efforts to make a difference

MINNEAPOLIS, April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Walden University’s newest Scholars of Change are students and graduates who focus on the future, whether they are founding organizations to make changes across the globe or working to improve the lives of people in their community. Nearly 50 Walden students and alumni submitted inspiring videos of social change for the 2016 Scholars of Change video contest, demonstrating how they are putting their knowledge to use for the greater good and living the university’s mission of effecting positive social change.

Three individuals were named Walden’s 2016 Scholars of Change, each receiving a $4,000 prize in addition to a $500 donation to the charity of their choice.

  • Maria Onyia, a Doctor of Education (EdD) graduate from Lagos, Nigeria. Inspired to improve education in her native Nigeria, Dr. Onyia works to “adopt” public schools and assist in training their teachers, providing supplies and offering scholarships to children at the primary level. Her charity is the OrgLearning Foundation.
  • Tamar Boyd, a PhD in Psychology graduate from Juneau, Alaska. After experiencing a traumatic response that could have been avoided following childbirth, Dr. Boyd was determined to help other women after delivery, providing them with the physical and mental support resources they need to maintain their health. Her charity is Parents as Teachers™, an affiliate program of the Association for the Education of Young Children, Southeast Alaska.
  • Dawn Broers, a PhD in Social Work student from Bourbonnais, Illinois. Driven to help the homeless in her community, Broers established the organization Fortitude Canteen Outreach to assist with outreach and provide access to clothing and food for the underserved population. Her charity is Fortitude Canteen Outreach.

“Fortitude Canteen Outreach runs on a shoestring budget and with only volunteer labor, so the opportunity to win $500 was a huge incentive for us. But I also saw it as an opportunity to show that social change can happen in our backyards,” said Broers. “I was so impressed by videos from previous years, some of which show huge change efforts happening around the world. I thought there was no way our small-town homeless outreach could compare to those efforts, but I’m thrilled that this will bring awareness to local activism. I hope others are inspired to create social change in their communities as well.”

Other inspiring stories of social change from Walden students and alumni include three additional honorable mention scholars, who each received $500:

For more than 45 years, Walden University has provided a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can apply what they’ve learned to effect positive social change. The Scholars of Change program began in 2009 when Walden invited students and alumni to submit short videos showing how they were applying their Walden education and experience to create positive social change in their communities and around the globe.

Sabre to provide consulting services to AFRAA member airlines

New agreement will help African carriers compete with global counterparts

NAIROBI, Kenya and SOUTHLAKE, Texas, April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Sabre Corporation (NASDAQ: SABR), a global technology provider to the travel and tourism industry will provide consulting services to several of its member airlines through a new agreement with the African Airlines Association (AFRAA).

Photo – http://mma.prnewswire.com/media/486779/Sabre_AFRAA.jpg

Ten carriers will take part in Sabre’s consulting programme – including Rwandair, South African Airways and Royal Air Maroc – which will include a comprehensive analysis of the airlines’ brands and customer satisfaction and will provide each airline with a Net Promoter Score (NPS).   Airlines taking part in Sabre’s new NPS study will undergo a comprehensive survey that will seek to provide them with a greater understanding of their customers’ pain points and experiences, as well as the desires and motivations of the African air traveller.  The programme will also include access to complementary best practice workshops and recommendations on how technology can enhance revenue, decrease costs and improve the passenger experience throughout the year.

“Demand for air travel in Africa could rise by as much as 24% after the introduction of the new pan-African passport in 2018,” said Dino Gelmetti, vice president EMEA, Airline Solutions at Sabre.  “However, recent research by Sabre identified common pain points of African consumers and barriers to travel such as difficulty booking, confusing check-in procedures and a lack of flights to chosen destinations.  As air travel becomes more accessible to African citizens, it is important that African carriers gain a deeper understanding of their customers, and equip themselves with robust, reliable and flexible technology.  This will enable them to win market share from their international counterparts, which currently operate more than 80 percent of flights in African airspace.”

The results of the NPS study will be presented to participating carriers at AFRAA’s Annual Stakeholders Convention in Tunisia on May 7th – 9th.

“Sabre, one of AFRAA’s esteemed partners, has experience in helping many of the world’s leading airlines to stay competitive and address their business challenges,” said Dr. Elijah Chingosho, AFRAA Secretary General.  “It was therefore a natural choice to enter into this new agreement with Sabre, and we look forward to offering our members access to its expertise to improve their own operations and compete with some of the world’s most successful carriers.”

Sabre provides technology and consultancy services to more than 225 airlines, including most of the world’s largest carriers. Sabre’s broad suite of flexible and scalable software solutions allows airlines to operate how they want to and adapt their business to changing needs and requirements.  Many of Africa’s top carriers – including South African Airways, Kulula, Ethiopian Airlines – already use Sabre’s technology to address their biggest challenges – increasing revenue, minimising costs and providing an enhanced travel experience.

Por Grace Foundation Announces Publication of Positive Independent Study Results in Mexico Using RSHO-X™

Study Shows Significant Quality of Life Improvements for Epileptic Children in Addition to Seizure Reduction

SAN DIEGO, April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Por Grace Foundation, a Mexican national reference of the fight to gain access to cannabis derived products for the treatment of several neurodegenerative conditions, today announced the results of a new survey from the viewpoint of the parents of children with refractory epilepsy (RE). Conducted by renowned Mexico Physician Dr. Carlos G. Aguirre Velazquez, the study found that out of 43 cases of children who were treated with cannabidiol (CBD) hemp oil, over 81% showed a reduction in convulsions. Additionally, these new study results have been published in Neurology Research International.

The product most commonly used in the survey was Medical Marijuana, Inc.’s (OTC: MJNA) subsidiary HempMeds® Mexico’s flagship product, Real Scientific Hemp Oil-X™ (RSHO-X™). RSHO-X™ was the first product to receive COFEPRIS approval for import into Mexico and is 100% THC-free.

The survey, which was the first observational study carried out in Mexico exploring the use of medicinal cannabis in pediatric RE, also reported that out of the 43 cases 51% showed a significant decrease in convulsions (greater than 75% reduction), while 16% reported being completely seizure free. Further, 9 out of the 43 cases reduced the anti-epileptic drugs they were using and zero serious side effects reported.

In addition, the survey reported an overall increased quality of life of the patients with 88% showing improved cognition, 86% showing improved emotions or mood, 77% showing an improvement in sleep, and 67% showing a better appetite.

“These new survey findings where the improvements reported by the parents were related not only to the frequency of the seizures, but also their duration and intensity, come on the heels of another critical study recently performed in Mexico with our Company’s RSHO-X™ product, which also showcased the therapeutic benefits of hemp-based botanical CBD,” said Raul Elizalde, President of the Por Grace Foundation. “We are excited that new evidence on how CBD oil is providing epileptic children with relief continues to emerge in Mexico and we expect this news to spread and help patients all across the world.

Epilepsy is a common and chronic neurological disorder that over 50 million people worldwide suffer from, with 85% of these patients residing in developing countries such as Mexico. Nearly 2.4 million new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed every year, according to the World Health Organization. In Mexico alone, 1.5 million patients have epilepsy, with 80% of patients receiving inadequate treatment, while 30% of patients have RE, an epilepsy defined as a failure to respond to antiepileptic drugs.

‘Panama Papers’ group among initiatives to benefit from Omidyar Network’s $100M commitment to address trust deficit

– Philanthropic investment firm Omidyar Network increases support for independent media, tackling misinformation and hate speech, and helping citizens better engage with government –

OXFORD, England, April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Omidyar Network, the leading philanthropic investment firm established by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, today announced at the Skoll World Forum a $100M commitment to tackle some of the root causes of the global trust deficit.  The funding, which runs over the next three years, will focus on strengthening independent media and investigative journalism, tackling misinformation and hate speech, and enabling citizens to better engage with government on critical issues. The funding will support work across the globe.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the group behind last year’s Panama Papers investigation, will be one of the first recipients of this funding. ICIJ will receive a three-year grant of up to $4.5M USD to expand its investigative reporting.

“Across the world, we see a worrying resurgence of authoritarian politics that is undermining progress towards a more open and inclusive society,” stated Omidyar Network Managing Partner Matt Bannick. “A lack of government responsiveness and a growing distrust in institutions, especially the media, are eroding trust. Increasingly, facts are being devalued, misinformation spread, accountability ignored, and channels that give citizens a voice withdrawn. These trends cannot become the norm, and we must protect the principles of openness, participation, and accountability. These are the foundations of a healthy democratic society.”

Recent events, such as the UK’s debate on EU membership, the impeachment of Brazil’s President Rousseff, the U.S. Presidential election, and ongoing corruption globally, have eroded the public’s trust in institutions, experts, and the media.  An environment of misinformation, “alternative facts,” and “post truth” have taken their toll. The 2017 Edelman Trust Barometer found that two thirds of the 28 countries surveyed are now “distrusters,” meaning less than 50% of a country’s respondents trust in the mainstream institutions of business, government, media and NGOs to do what is right.  Additionally, Edelman found that trust in the media has declined sharply with media institutions being distrusted in 82% of countries.

Over the last ten years, Omidyar Network has supported independent media, investigative journalism, and fact-checking organizations around the world. Investees include Emmy-winning Insight TWI: The World Investigates, Innovate Africa, which works to improve the quality and impact of journalism in Africa, and Chequeado, Latin America’s first fact-checking site.

Stephen King, partner and global lead for the Governance & Citizen Engagement initiative at Omidyar Network, added: “A free and independent media is key to providing trusted information and critical checks and balances on those in positions of power. We are increasing our support for this work to ensure it scales and accelerates to keeps pace with the challenges society is facing. We are therefore delighted to provide the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists with a $4.5M core grant. This will enable the organization to expand its investigations and shine more light on the dark corners of society where power is misused, corruption facilitated, and trust eroded.”

Gerard Ryle, director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, commented, “At a time when autocrats, demagogues, criminals, dodgy businessmen, and other shady characters are seeking to enrich and empower themselves at the expense of society, it is more important than ever that journalists can remain the world’s independent eyes and ears, and root out corruption and wrongdoing. But more and more this kind of vital work is only possible in the non-profit sector. Funding from organizations such as Omidyar Network enables us to continue producing groundbreaking, nonpartisan investigative projects that have real and measurable impact on communities around the globe.”

The first organizations and initiatives to benefit from Omidyar Network’s funding are listed below. Further investments and grants will be announced in the coming weeks.

  • Alianza Latinoamericana para la Tecnología Cívica (ALTEC) – A project launched this year by Omidyar Network, Fundación Avina, and Avina Americas to support the development and promotion of innovative civic technology platforms to promote civic engagement and – in turn – improve democracy, government accountability, and transparency in Latin America.
  • The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) – founded in 1913, ADL is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice, and bigotry. With seed funding from Omidyar Network, ADL will build a state-of-the-art command center in Silicon Valley to combat the growing threat posed by hate online.
  • The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) – A network of more than 190 investigative journalists in more than 65 countries who collaborate to report global issues including cross-border crime, corruption, and the accountability of power. Last year they famously exposed the Panama Papers; 11.5 million leaked Mossack Fonseca documents revealing offshore business entities linked to fraud, tax evasion, and international sanction evasions.

Today’s announcement builds on the $220M USD that Omidyar Network has committed over the last decade through its Governance & Citizen Engagement initiative to drive accountability and transparency of government.

Notes to editorsWatch Stephen King, Partner and global lead for Omidyar Network’s Governance & Citizen Engagement initiative discuss the critical role of independent media and investigative journalism, and why we must tackle the rise in misinformation and hate speech live at the Skoll World Forum (#skollwf).
