Today, consumers can access premium live sports content, including the English Premier League, National Basketball Association (NBA), Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) and the National Football League (NFL), among others, on Android and iOS mobile devices through the app, FTA set-top boxes, and digital TVs with a built-in set-top box.

“It’s an exciting time to be in the broadcasting and media industry in Africa, especially as viewers are looking for increased choice and quality in their programming, as well as more convenient access. We aim to fill the existing gap in the market by providing viewers across the African continent with premium quality content,” said Joseph Hundah, Chief Executive Officer of Econet Media. “We recognize that we need to select the right partners in order for us to achieve our objectives, and security is an important aspect of our business. Verimatrix provides us with a scalable and cost-effective security solution.”

The dti Affords Eastern Cape Communities Opportunity to Comment on The National Liquor and Gambling Amendment Bills

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will host public consultations on the National Liquor Amendment and Gambling Amendment Bills in the Eastern Cape from 16-17 November 2016. The sessions will take place in Mthatha, Graaf Reinet and Port Elizabeth respectively and is targeted at all stakeholders and the public in general. The consultative sessions form part of a national roadshow that the dti is undertaking to gather comments and inputs from the public regarding the two Bills.

According to the Acting Deputy Director-General of Consumer and Corporate Regulation at the dti, Mr MacDonald Netshitenzhe, the main objective of the roadshow is to hold public consultations so as to gather comments and inputs on the draft National Liquor Amendment Bill 2016 and National Gambling Amendment Bill 2016.

“The initiative seeks to acquire public input on both Bills and to conduct education and awareness on benefits and ills associated with excessive gambling and liquor abuse. Both industries affect the society in positive and negative ways, but the negatives always outweigh the positives. As government we are constitutionally required to involve the public in policy formulation in order to ensure that the laws approved have considered views from all affected,” saysNetshitenzhe.

He adds that the dti has since extended the deadline for submissions and public comments on the National Liquor Amendment Bill for a further two weeks. The closing date is now 30 November 2016. Netshitenzhe says the extension will further give stakeholders an opportunity to provide more valuable inputs.
