Meridian Malaria Test Wins Prestigious Innovation Award

illumigene® Malaria Receives 1st Place Award at the Journées Internationales de Biologie /Association des Colloques Nationaux des Biologistes Conference in Paris

CINCINNATI, Aug. 30, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Meridian Bioscience, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIVO) was awarded 1st place for innovation in emergency treatment and point-of-care testing for its illumigene® Malaria test at the 2016 JIB/ACNBH Conference this summer. Innovations from worldwide companies contributing to the development of the Medical Biology industry were put under the spotlight at this year’s conference held in Paris, France, and were reviewed by worldwide expert members in the medical biology field.

The illumigene Malaria test is a major step forward in providing faster, more accurate diagnoses that can lead to prompt treatment and better patient outcomes, as malaria remains one of the top 3 killers of children globally, claiming one life every minute of every day. The test is up to 400 times more sensitive at detecting the malaria parasite than conventional tests, potentially revolutionizing malaria diagnosis and establishing a new gold standard for both the developed and developing world. By using molecular LAMP technology, illumigene Malaria provides results in less than one hour, and does not require refrigeration or heating of materials, nor a high level of technical expertise.

Professor Daouda Ndiaye, chief of the laboratory of parasitology and mycology at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Senegal, who presented the test at the event, commented; “This is not merely a scientific breakthrough. Faster and more accurate diagnosis is vital in the fight against malaria. Because of submicroscopic parasitemia carriage among the populations, a robust, sensitive and field community-deployable screening tool is needed to track the malaria reservoir in pre-elimination regions. The clinical trial I ran in Senegal for the validation of the test shows that illumigeneMalaria has this capacity.”

Meridian’s product development strategy is driven by three core concepts—speed, simplicity, and accuracy – that empowers healthcare providers around the world to improve patient care. Slava Elagin, Executive Vice President Research & Development for Meridian Bioscience, said, We are delighted that illumigene Malaria has been recognized as a breakthrough in emergency treatment and point-of-care testing and we look forward to more illumigene tests making a positive impact worldwide. We are evaluating a wide range of product ideas to assess which ones have the greatest potential to become the next breakthrough in diagnosis.”

The illumigene Malaria test received the CE Mark in January of this year, and is available in the European, Middle Eastern and African regions by Meridian Bioscience Europe and in additional international markets by the Company’s global distribution network. South Africa: Premier Willies Mchunu Welcomes Mr Zhu Xiaodan, Governor of Guangdong Province, China

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu has welcomed to the province His Excellency Zhu Xiaodan, the Governor of Guangdong Province, from the People’s Republic of China. The governor was received at the King Shaka International Airport today by the Leader of Government Business and MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala. He is leading a government and business delegation to explore investment opportunities in KZN.

Mchunu emphasized: “Local government elections are over and it is time to focus on building a stronger KZN socially and economically. We cannot afford to disappoint those who voted in the local government elections recently as they made it loud and clear that they want jobs and a better life.”

“Our main focus as the province is to attract foreign direct investment into all corners of the province. It is for these reasons that we have invited mayors, local chambers and entrepreneurs to interact with the delegation from Guangdong, a province regarded as a global manufacturing hub.”

“It is our considered view that for South Africa to create 11 million new jobs by 2030, KwaZulu-Natal will have to create 2.1 million jobs. To achieve this, we have to ensure that the KZN economy grows at an average of at least 4% per annum between now and 2030.”

“One of the areas we are focusing on is Foreign Direct Investment. As the province we have realized that countries like India, Brazil and China have grown at a higher rate because they are benefiting from foreign direct investment while others have not been able to attract as much FDI.”

“It should be noted that few years ago we hosted the BRICS Summit which paved the way for our economy to be integrated with economies of countries in the BRICS bloc. KwaZulu-Natal is continuously learning from these countries.”

“FDI is a source for economic development, income growth and employment creation. More importantly, FDI helps create a more competitive business environment and enhances enterprise development. All of these contribute to higher economic growth, which is the most potent tool for alleviating poverty.”

South Africa: North West Legislature On Additional Resources for Cattle Breeders in Zeerust

North West Legislature Agriculture Committee to Approach Department of Agriculture for additional resources for cattle breeders Under “Tshimo ya Kgosi” programme at Zeerust

The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Rural, Environment and Agriculture Development will approach the Department of Rural Environment and Agricultural Development to provide agricultural resources which includes water supply; land for cattle breeding and additional training to cattle breeders under Tshimo ya Kgosi programme in Gopane and Motshana villages in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

The Committee went to assess the programme which was launched by the MEC for the department, Manketse Tlhape in 2014 where amongst the beneficiaries, Kgosi Ikalafeng Lencoe of Moshana and Kgosi Kereeditse Gopane of Gopane villages received 25 pregnant heifers; 1 bull; feeds and medication.

The programme which is in line with the National Department of Agriculture’s Fetsa Tlala poverty alleviation programme, aims to encourage the use of arable land for agriculture and food production.

Kgosi Lencoe of Bahurutshe Ba Ga Lencoe said the farm where the cattle are kept, has scarce water and feeding recourses.

“We are situated near a desert-like environment which has experienced severe drought in the past years. Since the department brought cattle to our farm, they have not assisted us with any agricultural resources,” said Kgosi Lencoe.

Kgosi Gopane of Bahurutshe Bo Gopane raised a serious concern on lack of training on cattle farming which resulted in the community loosing several calves.

“I have requested more training from the department on how to improve our farming skills. We have also asked for a farm were we can keep the cattle as we do not own the current farm. Our communal land is overpopulated for grazing,” said Kgosi Gopane.

The Acting Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Mahlakeng Mahlakeng assured the traditional leaders that all their complaints will be forwarded to the department and will arrange a joint oversight for re-visit some of the projects.

“We will convene a meeting with the department to fast track the matter of acquiring land for the cattle and additional training and feeds, as deemed fit for a Chiefs. The intended objective of this poverty alleviation programme will not be feasible if there is no land provided for the cattle to stay and graze on,”said Hon. Mahlakeng. The Committee has resolved to meet the department within 14 days.
