DA DISINGENUOUS ABOUT SOCIAL GRANTS

The Minister of Social Development believes that the Democratic Alliance has been blatantly dishonest, and deliberately seeking to mislead the public with the statement that alleges that the Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini has said that poor households can live on R753 per month.

The DA has deliberately distorted and misrepresented the Minister’s reply to a parliamentary question on the criteria for the determinants of social grants increases. In the reply, the Minister clearly stated that the increases were amongst others, informed by the official poverty line which is determined by Statistics South Africa currently at R753 per month, a critical issue that the DA chose to be oblivious about and deliberately mislead the public in the hope to gain political points ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

In fact, the increases on all other grants with the exception of the Child Support Grant are above the basic poverty line as determined by Stats SA.

In the written parliamentary question reply, the Minister clearly stated that the social grants increases are determined in consultation with the National Treasury given the national fiscal space and many other priorities within the national budget allocation.

Contrary to their allegations and consistent with their official position, the DA Mayoral candidate, Herman Mashaba recently made public statement that the social assistance programme “creates dependency and discourages people from seeking employment”. http://transformsa.co.za/2015/03/3-highly-profitable-bee-deals-to-avoid-2/

In October 2014, Patricia Kopane told a weekly newspaper that “these grants create a dependency problem!” Sadly, that is the consistent thinking of many in the DA. Such reckless utterances are in sync with the DA’s desperate attempts to win the electorates support. The DA and its public representatives fail to understand that unemployment is a systemic challenge and it is an insult to even suggest that people choose to be unemployed.

It is hypocrisy of the highest order which smacks of political desperation for a party like the DA which has been opposed to progressive policies and programmes such, as the universalization of the Child Support Grant and the Old Age Grant as well as the introduction of the national minimum wage to suddenly claim sympathy with the poor. The same hypocrites who are now calling for social grants increases.

It is clear that the DA has embarked on a blatant propaganda machine ahead of the upcoming elections and they will stop at nothing to misrepresent information and willfully choose to distort facts. This statement lays bare the hypocrisy of the DA and their flip flop around issues of the poor. The real truth is that the government of African National Congress has been at the forefront of introducing solidarity based policies and programmes that today are recognized globally for closing the inequality gap and cushioning many poor households against harsh economic realities.

We also hasten to add that every year the Department of Social Development has been on the record advocating for social grants increases that are above the inflation rate.
