TWO MILLION VISITORS FLOCK TO SOUTH AFRICA’S KZN PROVINCE FOR HOLIDAYS

DURBAN, Nearly two million visitors have flocked to the eastern South African province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) to soak up the sun and take part in the fun festivities taking place there this festive season.

Multiple music concerts, fun family events and a vibrant nightlife can all be enjoyed in Durban and across the province during this year-end festive season, says the Head of Durban Tourism, Phillip Sithole.

The city is expected to get an economic boost of more than 3.0 billion Rand (about 200 million US dollars) from the parties and events taking place, says Sithole, who adds that the 3.0 billion Rand estimates compares with last year’s 2.5 billion Rand.

According to Sithole, this year, Durban Tourism was estimating that the economic injection that will be experienced in the festive season will be more than R3.5 billion.

This festive season is set to be a bumper one for KZN with almost two million cars having already flocked into the province, exceeding last year’s count by at least 10 per cent.

There has also been an increase in occupancy in the hospitality sector with hotel bookings at above 63 per cent capacity.

The Member of the KZN Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs, Michael Mabuyakhulu, says the recent addition of four airlines flying into KZN has given tourism an extra boost to the province.
